The passenger vehicle oil pan (lower crankcase) is a core component at the bottom of the engine that stores, seals, cools, and protects the lubricating oil, directly determining lubrication reliability and engine life.

Core Role (Four Key Aspects)

Oil Storage and Circulation: Stores engine oil, collects return oil from all friction surfaces, and provides a stable oil supply to the oil pump.

Sealed Protection: Encloses the crankcase to provide dustproof, waterproof, and leak-proof protection, while maintaining pressure balance within the crankcase.

Auxiliary cooling: Heat is conducted through the housing and dissipated by the oncoming airflow during vehicle operation, thereby slowing down oil oxidation.

Oil stabilization and impurity removal: internal oil-stabilizing baffles suppress oil-surface sloshing, the bottom sediment collects impurities, and the magnetic drain plug adsorbs ferrous debris.

 

Two main types: wet vs. dry (the core difference in passenger vehicles)

1. Wet Sump (Wet Sump, standard equipment on 99% of passenger cars)
Principle: Engine oil is stored directly in the oil pan, and the oil pump draws oil from the bottom; the rotating crankshaft causes oil to splash for lubrication.
Structure: Integrated large oil sump with built-in oil-stabilizing baffle, oil suction pipe, dipstick, and drain plug.
Advantages: simple structure, low cost, no external oil tank required, and easy maintenance.
Drawbacks: Prone to cavitation under extreme operating conditions (large bank angles, high G-forces, and aggressive driving); engine center of gravity is relatively high.
Applicable to: standard passenger vehicles such as sedans, SUVs, and MPVs.

2. Dry Sump (High-Performance / Racing / High-End Sports Cars)
Principle: The oil pan serves solely as an oil collection and return passage, while the engine oil is stored in an external oil reservoir; multi-stage oil pumps are used to force circulation and provide pressurized lubrication.
Structure: a shallower, thinner oil pan, an external oil tank, and a dual-pump system (suction pump + pressure pump).
Advantages: lower center of gravity and improved handling; no air entrapment in any attitude; more stable cooling and lubrication.
Disadvantages: complex structure, high cost, large footprint, and difficult maintenance.
Applicable to: sports cars, performance cars, and off-road vehicles (anti-rollover fuel cut-off).
